  Three pearls of wisdom
There is much advice out there in the world, some wise, some helpful, some complete tosh. These are three pieces of advice I have been given over the years that have stuck with me:

Think general

When trying to solve a problem, aim for a solution that is flexible and adaptable. An adjustable wrench not a spanner.

Never go out without money

You never know when you might need it. At the very least have your bus fare home.

Always button your cardigan from the bottom

Then you can see what you are doing and don't end up a button out at the top.

Nice ones. Pieces of advice that have stuck with me are the one about always having ladderless tights and fancy underwear on in case you get run over, [my mum], "always go from the particular to the general point and not the other way round in an essay" [my French prof], and "remember there's no such thing as a bankrupt bookie" [my dad]. Buon Natale to you and yours from Sicily, Mark.

Very good advice, indeed! Once, the hub and I were stuck in NYC at Grand Central Station unable to take a train back to DC. A train derailed elsewhere and shut down our tracks and there we were, broke, not enough cash to take a taxi nor a subway anywhere; no hotels would cash our checks (before ATMs were availabe, I'm afraid) and there we were. Had to call his parents to come and get us! Amateur adults still leaning on the real adults to bail us out! ha. Ever since then, I have hid at least $20 in my walet, $100 when traveling--enough for a taxi out of hell!

Excellent advice. Happy holidays to you and yours!
